This month, Oren Gradus can be heard in Annapolis, Maryland as a soloist in Handel’s Messiah with the United States Naval Academy. An annual tradition now in its 67th year, the USNA Music Department’s performance of Handel’s holiday masterwork is conducted by Dr. Aaron Smith and features the USNA Glee Club and Annapolis Symphony Orchestra. Following an acclaimed performance as Ramfis in Pittsburgh Opera’s Aida, Oren Gradus makes his second appearance with the company this season as Sarastro in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte, November 9–17.
Oren joins an all-star cast for Mozart’s mythical and magical singspiel, which also includes Audrey Luna as the Queen of the Night, Layla Claire as Pamina, Sean Panikkar as Tamino, and Craig Vern as Papageno. The production, directed by Jennifer Nicoll, also reunites Oren with Pittsburgh Opera’s music director Antony Walker, who leads the action from the podium.
In a return to Pittsburgh Opera and celebration of Verdi’s bicentennial, American bass Oren Gradus has earned accolades for his performance of high priest Ramfis in Aida. “Oren Gradus sang very well as Ramfis, the high priest, offering strength and dignity,” wrote the Pittsburgh Tribune.
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette added that Oren “showed off full-bodied vocals, particularly during strong off-stage singing in the judgment scene.” Conducted by Anthony Walker and costarring Latonia Moore, Carl Tanner, and Elizabeth Bishop, Aida runs through October 20.

Bass-baritone Oren Gradus returns to Pittsburgh Opera October 12–20 for Verdi’s Aida. A former resident artist of the company, Oren sings the role of high priest Ramfis having formerly sung the part at the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma. He has also been heard in Verdi’s sumptuous Egyptian epic at the Metropolitan Opera in the role of the King.
A production from the Opéra de Montreal, Aida is directed by Crystal Manich and conducted by Anthony Walker. Oren stars opposite Carl Tanner as Radames, Latonia Moore as Aida, and Elizabeth Bishop as Amneris.
